Heavy artillery from automatic weapons has been heard in the center of the Guinean capital Conakry. Many soldiers can also be seen on the street, several witnesses told the French news agency AFP. It is not yet clear whether it is a mutiny or an attempted coup.
In the center of Conakry are the Presidential Palace, institutions and corporate offices. The authorities have so far not communicated about the situation.
Residents reported ongoing gunfire over the phone. For their safety, they insisted on remaining anonymous. “We have seen many soldiers. Residents were urged to go home and stay there,” it said.
