A 45-year-old Japanese from Kitakyushu was arrested because he used a taser to punish his three children. It is yet another case of child abuse in Japan in recent years. The government is working on a ban on corporal punishment.
The 45-year-old man confessed to the police that he was attacking his daughters (17 and 13) and his 11-year-old son with a surge weapon, “if they didn’t follow the rules.” The girls had no visible injuries, the boy had a small burn on his arm.
In recent years, there have been many cases of serious child abuse. Last year, the five-year-old Yua Funato died after her father beat her up and starved her. Prime minister Shinzo Abe then promised steps to rule out such crimes in the future.
Yesterday, the Japanese House of Commons passed a bill banning corporal punishment by parents. In Asia, Japan – after Mongolia in 2016 and Nepal in 2018 – would only be the third country to issue such a ban.
