Libya’s situation “has deteriorated quite rapidly,” senior UN official says

The senior UN representative in Libya informed the Security Council on Tuesday, August 20, that efforts to reach a negotiated political settlement have become more difficult due to the recent events in the Maghreb nation.

Libya’s political, economic, and security stability has dramatically worsened during the last two months. The political, military, and security actors in Libya’s unilateral actions have made a negotiated settlement more challenging. These actions have also heightened tension and deepened institutional and political differences.

For his part, Libyan Ambassador Taher Al-Sunni informed the Council that “free, transparent, and inclusive elections are the only way to end divisions and address the precarity of institutions in Libya.”
