After almost a month without new Ebola infections, authorities in Guinea had hoped that the epidemic had ended, but a new case crushes that hope. The health services reported yesterday evening that a new infection was discovered in the province of Soulouta, in the southeast. Until now, this epidemic in Guinea has claimed at least ten lives.
In order to limit the further spread in Soulouta, precautions were immediately taken in the region. “We track down and isolate all contacts and suspected cases,” said Sory Keira of health authority ANSS.
No new Ebola infections had been reported since March 4. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) had only recently spoken of an “important step” in the fight against this epidemic.
This outbreak is related to the earlier devastating outbreak in 2014 and 2015 that hit several West African countries, according to the pan-African health service Africa CDC. That outbreak was the biggest ever. More than 11,000 people died of Ebola in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
