Nigeria: One of the popular 2019 presidential aspirant suspended

The popular female presidential candidate in the pipeline until the 2019 general election, Eunice Atuejide, has been suspended by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of her party, the National Interest Party (NIP).

Ms. Atuejiden, who serves as the party’s national president, was suspended along with the party’s National Secretary, Audu Israel, for allegations that border on forgery, misappropriation of party funds without the necessary approval, falsification of documents, abuse of trust, conversion and criminal conspiracy, antiparty activities and usurpation of power.

A statement signed and issued yesterday by the party’s National Legal Advisor, Sanni Abass, at the end of an emergency meeting held in Abuja, says: “After a unanimous decision taken by 2/3 of the members of the National Executive Committee, the party alleges, among other serious misconduct, falsification, misappropriation of party funds without the necessary approval, forgery of documents, abuse of trust, conversion and criminal conspiracy, anti-parliamentary activities and usurpation of power against the person of the president and the National secretary, all this is not in keeping with the spirit of the party’s doctrine.

“It will also interest the public to know that Mrs. Eunice Atuejide has governed the party in an autocratic manner, naming herself National President, National Leader, Chief Whip and, above all, Presidential Aspirant of the party without the approval of the NEC of the party.

“This suspension is in line with the existing provision of the party constitution, which stipulates that a party member may be suspended by the National Executive Committee and the committee may decide what disciplinary measures to impose on a party member.

“At the meeting, it was resolved that Mrs. Atuejide and the National Secretary will remain suspended until the ongoing investigations of the national executive committee of the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission-INEC conclude.”

Meanwhile, a strong written request has been sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, about the suspension notice and also to the relevant anti-graft agencies for further investigations into the alleged fraudulent practices directed against party bosses.
