The number of corona cases in Africa is beginning to visibly decline, even though only 5.5% of the population has been vaccinated. According to the African Union Health Organization (Africa CDC), the number of new infections across the continent has dropped by 26 percent to 31,000 cases per day.
Africa CDC spoke of “a good signal” and said the continent has made “a lot of progress”. Leading the way in terms of vaccination is Morocco, which has so far vaccinated 57 percent of its residents.
“The infection numbers are falling slightly, but steadily,” said John Nkengasong, who did warn of a possible backlash. A total of 188 million vaccines have since been administered.
Still, according to the CDC, 8.5 million corona infections have been identified on the continent so far, with more than 218,000 of them fatal.
Experts say the number of unreported cases on the continent, with some 1.3 billion people, is probably a lot higher.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had recently stated that almost 86 percent of all corona infections in Africa go undetected and estimates the total number at some 59 million.
