It is an attempted coup d’état, which is underway, against the Guinean head of state, Alpha Condé, according to information reported by the newspaper Jeune Afrique. The newspaper said that heavy gunfire was heard this Sunday morning, September 5, 2021, in Conakry and on the island of Kaloum, where the presidential palace is located.
“Since 8 am, automatic gunfire has been heard in Kaloum, the business and administrative district where the presidential palace is located,” reported the local media, Guinea News.
“Several calls reporting the persistence of heavy gunfire in the Guinean capital, this Sunday morning,” said Guinea 114, stating that until 11 am GMT, “the reasons for these shots that terrorize the population” are not yet known.
“All the streets have been deserted, while heavy gunfire continues. The soldiers, visibly unhappy, empty the magazines of their weapons, while the inhabitants of Kaloum remain holed up, terrorized and worried,” Guinea News added.
The newspaper Kibaro224, meanwhile, indicated that these shootings began on Sunday when “more than 20 special forces pick-ups went to Kaloum”.
The Kalenews newspaper, which cites corroborating sources, reported that “these shots are heard from Camp Makambo, the camp which houses the presidential guard”.
