Shipwreck in Nigeria: “More than 150 missing presumably drowned”

More than 150 people reported missing after the wreckage of an overloaded vessel are believed to have drowned. The local authorities report this. The vessel sank in the Niger River, in northwestern Nigeria.

The overloaded wooden boat capsized on a lake not far from the shore near Wara, Kebbi State. This mainly concerns people from neighboring Niger, including women and children. The ‘ferry’ was used by people who came to a recently discovered gold mine.

“At the moment, only 20 people have been found alive. Four have been found dead, and 156 are still missing,” it said.
