Ten years in prison for insulting Islam

A Malaysian man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad on social media, police said on Saturday.

This is one of the heaviest religious convictions in recent years. The convicted person, known only under his Facebook user name “Ayea Yea,” was sentenced to 10 years and 10 months in prison.

He pled guilty to ten counts of anti-religious activities and misuse of communication networks, said the head of the national police, Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

Antireligious activity is punishable by two to five years in prison in Malaysia. The misuse of communication networks entails a maximum penalty of one-year imprisonment and/or a fine of up to 50,000 ringgits (12, 251 dollars).
