When purchasing a car, the price is mainly considered, but the trade-in value is almost as important. The British consumer site What Car? put together a top 10 of new cars that are the most stable in value after three years and the ten models that depreciate the most.
Some cars already lose 75 percent of their value after just three years, according to a study by What Car? Other models have fallen by only thirty percent at the same time. Trade-in value champions mainly include electric cars. A study of more than 7,000 different cars shows that new electric and hybrid vehicles retain an average of 47 percent of their market value.
This means that on average they beat both gasoline and diesel models. The car that remains the most valuable after three years is strangely enough not an electric car, but the Evoque R-Dynamic P250 from Range Rover. This model is only worth 30 percent less after three years. Hybrid models from Porsche and Audi also scored well in the study, all with retention of around 65 percent of their original price.
Hybrid
Slightly more affordable Toyota hybrid models – the Prius and RAV4 – completed the list. Both models retained around 63 percent of their original new price. But not all electric cars turned out to be a good investment. The owner of a Renault Zoe I Dynamique Nav only receives 29.3 percent of the original new price after three years of driving. The Italian manufacturer Fiat is also not doing well with its Doblo XL Combi and Tipo Easy Plus, which retain only about 26 percent of their value after three years.
Although the British results do not automatically apply to all cars sold in other countries, the study does give an indication of the sensitivity to the depreciation of certain models. The residual value of a car naturally has a lot to do with supply and demand in the market. Porsches, for example, are also very popular some countries. But that a Toyota scores well, has to do with the proven technical reliability of this brand, also in the longer term.
