Drama can happen at any time and anywhere. Lots of dramas have been happening in Nigeria politics, especially during the campaign. Nigerians have been encountering all sorts of drama from various politicians in Nigeria.
Interestingly, the main place of action was in campaigns. This is such a big show where fun and incredible action took place. Let’s take a look at these series of dramas that took place during the 2019 general election.
Five dramas that happened in 2019 election campaign
1. Buhari presents wrong person
During the 2019 presidential campaign of President Muhammadu Buhari at Cross River State, he presented the wrong person as the Party (APC) gubernatorial candidate. The tense was so astonished after he presented Ndoma Egba as a governorship candidate instead of Owan Enoh.
The drama was captured in a viral video when the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Adams Oshomole, was spotted trying to help the president identify the right gubernatorial candidate, but the president quickly raised the hand of Ndoma Egba, who usually approached him to pass the gubernatorial flag for further presentation.
One can’t believe Buhari won’t recognize the APC’s candidate for governorate in Cross River State. Yet, he asked people to vote for someone he doesn’t even know.
In another campaign drama, Buhari had to hand the flag of the Party to the Delta state gubernatorial candidate from the APC party. However, he said: “I am handing over this flag of honor to our presidential candidate”. When the man on the left corrected him by saying “gubernatorial”, President Muhammadu Buhari yet said “to our senatorial candidate”. Again, the man corrected him by saying “gubernatorial”. This time he said: “governortorial candidate”.
2. PDP Podium collapse
During the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign in Kebbi state, all party leaders on the podium, including gubernatorial candidate Isa Muhammad Galaudi, former chief of staff of Bukola Saraki, fell when the platform collapsed completely. Senior members of the Party in Kebbi state suffered varying degrees of injury after the campaign incident in the local government district of Jeda state.
But what exactly happened! After welcoming the crowd, the spokesman continued: “A’uzu billahi minasheitani rajimi”. (Seek protection from the Devil). Some Nigerians believed that the statement really upset the devil. The spokesman forgot the saying that he who dines with the devil must bring a long spoon. But this time, he kept a short microphone – too short to prevent the devil’s fever and anger. Then, the podium sank like a titanic ship. When those present went deep down to the floor, the curtain went down.
3. APC pavilion platform collapsed
About a week before the PDP podium collapsed, the platform of the APC pavilion collapsed, and dozens of their supporters were injured at the Maiduguri election campaign site in Borno. At least one person died, and more than 50 were injured in an incident in Ramat Square, where thousands of APC supporters crowded.
Part of the platform reportedly collapsed under the weight of people who were chanted and climbed to the top of a metal pavilion built to provide shade at the event site. The incident is said to have occurred in the middle of the event, and shortly before President Muhammadub Buhari gave his speech. The collapse of the structure was said to have caused a stir in the rally as many rushed to flee in search of safety.
4. PMB Slumps during campaign
A video of President Muhammadu Buhari falling during a presidential election rally in Lokoja, Kogi, has thrown different sizes of a spanner at work. With such drama at campaign ground, commentators expressing concern over the president’s fitness for political campaigning in 2019.
Many supporters of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), took the opportunity to call on the president to abandon his attempts to re-election for a second term. What really caused the drama is still sketchy. Some people blame it for his attire, while the opposition party was insisting of old age. But some believed he missed steps and lost balance.
In a tweet posted by Reno Omokri, a former aide of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, he stated: “MUST WATCH: President Buhari collapsing today in Lokoja. WATCH and SHARE Not that I am happy. I pity the man. He belongs in a retirement home, not in the Presidency. This man is not healthy. Those who love him should tell him to return to Daura.”
5. Drama of Osibanjo
In another drama during the presidential debate in 2019. Not surprisingly, Professor Yemi Osinbajo took a pause to recover from his “… this is why we are where we were today” blunder at the Vice Presidential debate.
This mistake really shook social media and caused laughter in the suffering and smiling state of Nigerian citizens.
Yet, in the same year, the Helicopter crash incident, which has Professor Yemi Osinbajo involved. The mishap made it the second time in seven months that the Vice President has played a game of chess with death. Fortunately, he survived both encounters.
