The Zambian authorities on Saturday evicted South African dancer Zodwa Wabantu from their territory. Famous for her exhibitions in daring outfits, her show was canceled because she dances without underwear, said her promoter.
The incident happened on Saturday night for the launch of a music album.
According to the organizer of the tour, Zodwa Wabantu was expelled upon arrival at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kuanda International Airport.
“I can confirm that Zodwa was sent back to South Africa by the Immigration Department,” his agent Lucky Munakampe told AFP.
Zambian Minister of Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili also told AFP last week that Zodwa would not be allowed to perform in the country.
“Zambia is a Christian nation where morals and ethics must be respected. We will not allow a woman to dance without underwear.”
Zambia is a largely conservative country where the majority of the population is a practicing Christian.
Last year, censorship authorities in Zimbabwe banned Zodwa from dancing at a carnival, but they backed off their decision, allowing the dancer to perform on private premises.
