Not surprisingly, Alassane Dramane Ouattara will remain at the head of Côte d’Ivoire for the next five years. The outgoing President was re-elected for a controversial third term on a crushing score of 94.27% of the votes in the first round, according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), which made the announcement on Monday night. A score river due to the boycott of the election by the opposition.
“Is therefore elected President of the Republic Mr. Alassane Ouattara,” said the President of the CIS, Ibrahime Coulibaly-Kuibiert, after reading the scores. The participation rate is 53.90%. But, these results have yet to be validated by the Constitutional Council.
Outgoing President Alassane Dramane Ouattara (78) obtained 94.27% of the vote (3,031,483 votes) in most constituencies. According to the scores announced by the CEI, the independent candidate Kouadio Konan Bertin comes, for his part, in the second position with 1.99% of the vote (64,011 votes).
The other two candidates had called for a boycott but still received votes. Former President, Henri Konan Bédié, finished 3rd with 1.66% (53 330 votes) and former Prime Minister Pascal Affi N’Guessan fourth with 0.99% (31 986 votes).
In addition, the Ivorian opposition, which boycotted the election, announced yesterday Monday the formation of a transitional government in protest against the candidacy of Alassane Dramane Ouattara for this contested third term. An announcement that has not yet elicited a reaction from the government.
Ivorians already fear another civil war as in 2010. The announcement of the victory of Alassane Dramane Ouattara, rejected by the outgoing President at the time, Laurent Gbagbo, had triggered a civil war lasting several months. Alassane Ouattara had come to power after the victory of his forces in 2011. The conflict had left more than 3,000 dead.
For 2020, Alassane Dramane Ouattara’s third term’s disagreement has already caused clashes ahead of the election, with at least 30 people killed. At least five more people were killed last Saturday, according to local sources.
