The Republicans’ leader in the Senate has explicitly blamed outgoing President Donald Trump for the storming of the Capitol by a gang of rioters. The scum was stoked with lies, Mitch McConnell said in the Senate. “They were roused by the president and other powerful people.”
The Senate may soon be pursuing a lawsuit against Trump after the House of Representatives indicted him a second-time last week. Once the article on the House’s impeachment has been sent to the Senate, the process can begin.
A two-thirds majority is required for conviction. It is unclear how many Republicans will vote for the Democrats. If Trump is convicted, he will no longer be able to run for president of the United States.
Trump is accused of inciting insurgency with fierce rhetoric who sought to challenge Joe Biden’s presidential election without any evidence. At least five people, including a police officer, were killed in the Capitol storming on January 6 just after a rally for Trump.
Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday at noon (local time) in Washington.
