Twitter hands over the US President (@POTUS) official account to Democrat Joe Biden on January 20, the day of his inauguration. The messaging platform does that even if Donald Trump has not yet admitted his election defeat.
The official accounts of the White House, the vice president, the first lady, will also be transferred. According to Twitter, this does not require an information exchange between Trump and Biden’s team.
@POTUS has 32.8 million followers, but Trump mainly communicates through his private account @realDonaldTrump, which is followed by nearly 89 million twitterers. Biden’s account has 19.3 million followers.
Biden was declared the winner of the election by prominent US media on November 7. Trump says without evidence that election fraud was involved and hopes to get a second term through lawsuits and political pressure. He refuses to give permission to start the process of transfer of power, as presidents did before him.
