Uganda gives hope for survivors after boat accident Victoriameer
Ugandan officials do not expect to find more survivors after the boat accident on Lake Victoria last weekend. The official death toll is 34, but the authorities still fear dozens more deaths. 26 people were saved from the crew, but the authorities suspected that the overloaded boat had more than 100 people on board.
“We suspended the search on Monday and we resume that morning. But at the moment we do not expect to find any survivors anymore,” said police spokesman Patrick Onyango. The government announced a day of national mourning on Friday.
The accident happened Saturday night near the beach Mutima, about 20 kilometres south of the capital Kampala. According to the police, the disaster is due to overload and the poor condition of the boat.
