A 24-year-old newly married woman has died after being struck by lightning. According to local media, the woman died two weeks after her marriage in Namukanaga village, Iganga district, Uganda.
The young woman, Kamuya Nabirye, died on the spot after being struck by lightning. She was sitting on a bench inside her home, as she carried her three-month-old daughter during a heavy downpour on Monday, October 5.
Speaking to “New Vision Uganda” on Tuesday, October 6, the deceased’s husband, Awali Nabatya, who shared a bench with his wife during the tragic incident, explained that all he saw was a bright light through the living room window, followed by a loud noise.
Nabatya said he later saw his wife drop their three-month-old daughter before falling to the ground. “I realized there was a problem, and I ran to my neighbors to alert them to what had happened,” he said.
Local Council 1 defense secretary Muzamiru Mudoola said residents rushed to the scene to find that Nabirye had already passed away.
Mudoola urged the government to provide residents with inexpensive surge arresters to avoid similar incidents. He said four people have died in the same village after being struck by lightning since the start of the year.
The deceased was officially married to her husband two weeks ago, and they returned from their honeymoon two days before the unfortunate incident.
During the month of August, ten children were killed by lightning as they tried to protect themselves from a storm during a football match in northern Uganda.
