7 attitudes that can block our blessings
When we encounter failures, when things don’t go as planned, or when the wilderness we are going through is prolonged, we often point the finger at an external agent when we may be the obstacle to our progress. Let’s discover some of the attitudes that can block God’s blessings for our lives.
Fear
Sometimes our minds are programmed for failure, and we expect the worst before even trying. Think of all the talents, dreams, goals, businesses, jobs, relationships, and more that have failed because of the fear of undertaking but also the fear of letting God take control. Fear is a barrier to experiencing the Lord’s blessings in that it alters our faith and makes it fallible.
When God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, He asked us to place blind trust in Him and show faith that can move mountains! It is up to us to fight against this spirit of fear so that we do not miss out on the wonderful things He has in store for us.
Doubt and lack of faith
James 1:8 states that a man who doubts is “like the waves of the sea, tossed by the wind and driven to and fro,” that he is “irresolute and fickle in all his ways.” When our attitude wavers between doubt, faith, doubt, and more doubt, we become like a wobbly chair: it is impossible to sit on it because it is unstable.
God also cannot bless someone who only trusts him every other day. So it is up to us to decide whether we want to be believers or skeptics. It is important to never let doubt get the better of us and to remain constant in our faith, no matter what happens and what our situation looks like.
Pride
Did you know that it is important to apologize and admit mistakes before God and people? It is proof of humility that no Christian can do without. Being able to admit our faults and wrongdoings allows us to get up and keep going when we fall. Proverbs 24:16 states that “the righteous will fall seven times but always rise.”
There is no shame in admitting failure. Let us not let our pride and arrogance convince us otherwise. Let us always remember that God hates the proud and that those who humble themselves will be lifted with Him.
Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness is not simply a refusal to forgive the person who has offended us. It is a sin because it is an act that distances us from God in that it prevents us from accessing the Lord’s forgiveness! Forgiveness is a very important thing. If your heart is plagued by unforgiveness, God will not be able to release His blessings on you!
Negativity
Negative thoughts can turn into negative words, and we all know how powerful words are. Thinking negatively imprisons us. We can unconsciously stifle our blessings by constantly seeing only the negative side of things. We tend to think that we will avoid too much disappointment if we expect the worst. It is time to stop talking in incompatible ways with what we want. Life is better when we keep a positive frame of mind, which is why Jesus and the apostle Paul recommend that we always be joyful!
Procrastination
To access God’s blessings, we must also do our part! There is no point in praying for a good grade on a test if you have not taken the time to study hard. God will always look at the effort we have made and the perseverance we have shown in our tasks before leading us to success.
If we spend our time putting off until tomorrow what we need to do today and never invest in the present moment, God will also put off His blessings for our lives!
Guilt
Guilt is one of the devil’s favorite tools. He loves to remind us of our mistakes, to make us question whether God has forgiven us for the terrible things we have done in the past. When we sin against God, it is important to avoid the trap attached to that sin, guilt, and avoid the “if only” syndrome.
Guilt only reminds us of who we were yesterday and prevents us from dreaming about who we will be tomorrow. God forgives us, but we must also learn to forgive ourselves. This is the only way to free ourselves from the burdens of the past and embrace the blessings of the future!
Many other attitudes prevent us from accessing God’s blessings. But what is important to remember is the importance of questioning ourselves and learning not to always see the obstacle on the other side of the road. The people we blame, the enemy we blame, the circumstances we curse may not be the ones blocking our blessings.
