Elton John calls Vatican hypocrite for refusing “to bless gay marriages”
Elton John (73) is shocked that the Catholic Church announced on Monday that same-sex marriages should not be celebrated. The singer is shocked on Twitter by the Vatican’s statement, which was signed by Pope Francis (84).
Catholic priests are not allowed to sanctify same-sex marriages because God blesses “no sin,” the statement read. According to John, this is “hypocrisy” because the Vatican has invested millions of dollars in its biopic “Rocketman” and has made money with it.
The singer is referring to the contribution that an investment fund in Malta has made to ‘Rocketman’.
The Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera found out in 2019 after an investigation that the Vatican is a major shareholder of that fund.
For example, the Catholic Church has invested in “a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David,” the singer tweeted.
John married David Furnish, 58, in 2014, the year same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales. The two had been in a registered partnership since 2005.
