Spain may prosecute Shakira for tax fraud of more than 14 million euros

Shakira will most likely have to appear in court after all because of the tax evasion charges against her in Spain. According to ‘El Pais’, the judge ruled today that there is sufficient evidence that the Colombian singer, who lives in Barcelona, has evaded taxes through tax havens. The Public Prosecutor’s Office may therefore proceed with the trial.

The 44-year-old Shakira is accused of hiding more than 14.5 million euros in companies between 2012 and 2014. The tax authorities said they tried to settle the case with Shakira, but turned to the courts when they were unsuccessful after repeated requests.

After a three-year investigation, the judge concluded today that there is sufficient evidence that a sum of 14.5 million was evaded and must be repaid.

The singer denies all accusations and previously revealed through her lawyers that she did not live in Barcelona at the time, but officially in the Bahamas.

She would therefore not have to pay taxes in Spain. However, according to prosecutors, she did not spend a day in the Bahamas between 2012 and 2014 and spent more than half of her time in Spain.

Shakira has been officially living in Spain since 2015. The singer left for the country because of her relationship with Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, with whom she has been together since 2011 and has two children.
