The new American horror film The Nun attracted more than 88,000 visitors last weekend. It was by far the best-visited title in Dutch cinemas in recent days. The Nun also established the record for the best opening of a horror film of this year, distributor Warner Bros.
The spin-off of The Conjuring tells about a priest and his pupil who will investigate the suicide of a young nun in a monastery in Romania. The best opening horror films of 2018 were until now A Quiet Place and The First Purge.
New films did well over the past weekend anyway. The revenge thriller Peppermint, with Jennifer Garner, drew 35,000 visitors. The very successful Searching thriller in the US attracted 20,000 visitors.
It tells the story of a father who refuses to wait when his daughter suddenly goes missing. Through the laptop of his teenage daughter, he tries to learn more about her life and her friends. The entire film is told through the screens of computers, smartphones and other technological devices. The leading roles are played by actors John Cho (Star Trek) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).
Director: Corin Hardy. Main roles: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga.
The mystique of the Roman Catholic Church is also a rewarding source of inspiration for this spin-off of the Conjuring series. This dark story, which takes place in Romania in the 1950s, is cleverly framed by scenes with paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren.
A nun hangs in a remote monastery. The Vatican sends a priest with his own demons and a young novice. The latter is played by the sister of Vera ‘Lorraine Warren’ Farmiga. Anyway, you guessed it: the duo, together with a strange French guy, ends up in an abomination nest where evil appears in creepy forms. This chapter is not as creepy as The Conjuring from 2013, but fortunately we work with proven shock effects, mounting trucks and sound design.
