This happens after Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Pelé’s goal record

Cristiano Ronaldo made a flawless hat-trick against Cagliari yesterday and totalled his goal in official games to 770. The Portuguese star player of Juventus does three times better than the record that Pelé had for a long time. Ronaldo immediately received congratulations from the Brazilian football legend afterwards.

“cristiano, life is a solo flight. Each makes his own journey. And what a beautiful journey you are having! I admire you a lot, I love watching you play and this is no secret to anyone. Congratulations on breaking my record of goals in official matches,” 80-year-old Pelé posted on his Instagram account.

“My only regret is not being able to give you a hug today.” According to his bio on social media, Pelé scored 1,283 goals, but then he also counts those in unofficial matches.

Ronaldo also responded on his Instagram page. “I’m filled with joy and pride as I acknowledge the goal that put’s me on top of the World’s goalscoring list,” wrote the 36-year-old Portuguese. “I could never have dreamed of while growing up as a child from Madeira.”

Ronaldo scored 5 goals for Sporting Lisbon, 118 for Manchester United, 450 for Real Madrid, 95 for Juventus and 102 for the Portuguese national team.

Whether he actually holds the record remains a matter of debate. Various sources disagree on which competitions should be considered official.

For the Gazzetta Dello Sport, the Czech Josef Bican is still the top scorer of all time with 805 goals. The Brazilian Romario himself calculated that he scored a thousand goals, but also counts youth matches. According to some sources, he also comes in 772 hits in official matches.
