This is the largest engine in the world

The 8.0-liter W16 engine from the Bugatti Chiron is the largest car engine. Yet that is a small block compared to the largest engine in the world, which can only be found in cargo ships.

The largest engine in the world is the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C. The capacity of the 14-cylinder engine of this marine engine is 1,820 liters or more than 200 times more than that of the Bugatti. To be clear: that is the volume of one cylinder.

The block produces a power of 7780 hp per cylinder. Add the engine capacity of all 14 cylinders together, and you have a total cylinder capacity of 25,480 liters. The total maximum power is 108,920 hp at 102 rpm. The diesel engine has a torque of almost eight million Newton meters.

A few more impressive figures: the crankshaft alone weighs 300,000 kilos and the cylinders have a diameter of 96 centimeters.

The engine has a length of 26.6 meters, is 13 meters high and weighs 2,300 tons. Consumption is also huge. More than 7,500 liters of fuel oil pass through it per hour. This means that even the largest container ships can reach a top speed of around 27 knots, or about 50 km/h.
