On average of 58 murders per day in South Africa

In South Africa, 21,022 people were killed in one year, which amounts to an average of 58 murders per day. The South African police announced this today. Children, and especially women are also increasingly victims.

In total, 21,022 people were killed in the African country with 57.7 million inhabitants between April 2018 and March 2019, an increase of 1.4 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. More than half of the murders were committed at the weekend and night, mostly under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

In addition, “a very large number of people are killed by people they know,” said Police Minister Bheki Cele to MPs in Cape Town. To understand the issue, the government called in the help of sociologists and psychologists.

The number of murders in South Africa has steadily increased over the past six years. Children are also increasingly the victims. Just over a thousand children were murdered in the past year, which is 29 percent more than in the previous twelve months. Also, more than 40,000 abuse were reported in a year in the country. Sexual crimes have therefore increased by 4.6 percent.

Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa promised to tackle crimes and murders of women and announced a series of projects to tighten legislation. This week thousands of people across the entire African country came to the streets to protest against violence against women.
