DRC: MP tried in hospital bed for offense to Head of State

In Congo, a full court made a trip on Tuesday, 20th February, in the hospital room of a deputy.

This is Gérard Mulamba “Gecoco”, accused of offending the head of state.
According to AFP, the Kinshasa provincial deputy faced the judge on Tuesday “in his place of hospitalization”.

His lawyer says that it is a “fury of power that wants to condemn by all means through a trial that is not one”.

The accused person is a member of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS). This is a historic opposition party.

According to his brother, Gecoco Mulumba “suffers from kidney complications”.
During this hearing, he could not speak or move from his hospital bed.

In addition, his lawyers inform that an order of the prosecutor’s office authorizes him to “take care in an appropriate hospital”.

The fate of the deputy, arrested since November 10, will be known this Thursday. He was arrested at the Kinshasa airport. On January 19, he was transferred to a clinic because his health was getting worse. This was “noted by state-appointed doctors,” according to his lawyer.

The defaulters face a prison sentence of up to 2 years.
