Due to US sanctions Hong Kong leader stacks banknotes in her house

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has stacks of cash at home because she no longer has a bank account due to US sanctions. In a TV interview, she said that she now has to pay cash every day for all kinds of things.

According to the British newspaper The Guardian, Lam is one of the highest paid politicians in the world, with a salary of 669,970.00 United States Dollar per year. At the same time, she was Hong Kong’s least popular leader since its handover to China in 1997.

Following her comment, social media users posted pictures of their piggy bank at home, contrasting her wealth. Others wondered how all that money is being delivered to her house.

The US government has previously punished the leadership of the Chinese city of Hong Kong and other top Chinese figures with sanctions after the communist regime introduced a strict security law in Beijing.

According to critics, the relative autonomy of the former British Crown Colony, which has been a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China since 1997, is being lost by that law.
