‘Harassed on WhatsApp’, Indian girl commits suicide
According to the police, a Hindu girl committed suicide after being harassed because of her relationship with a Muslim in Karnataka state in southern India.
She had confided in a friend on WhatsApp, admitting that she loved Muslims.
Police said that screenshots of this exchange were shared on social networks.
Police said five people from Hindu extremist groups went to her home on Saturday to warn her parents.
The 20-year-old girl committed suicide the same day.
Mr. K. Annamalai, a senior police official from Chikkamagaluru District, told the BBC that the victim had left a letter explaining her actions.
“She mentioned that there was a picture of her with a man from another religious community, that people started to talk about it and denigrate her character,” stated by the senior police officer.
He added that she committed suicide after five people went to her home to “complain to her mother that she was in love with a Muslim”.
The police have arrested one person and are still looking for others.
