Hotel in China collapsed: at least 8 dead, dozen injured

At least eight people have died in the collapse of a hotel building in eastern China. Nine others are said to be still under the rubble. The city government of Suzhou reports this in Jiangsu province.

The accident happened Monday afternoon when an annex of the Siji Kaiyuan Hotel in Wujiang City District, west of Shanghai, suddenly collapsed. Fourteen people have been rescued so far. Thirteen of them were injured, officials said. A large-scale rescue and recovery operation has been launched, which includes working with sniffer dogs.

It is still unclear why the hotel collapsed. An investigation into the cause is underway. Provincial authorities have already called for safety inspections to prevent similar incidents elsewhere.
