Somali refugee storms US Congress
Ilhan Omar, an American of Somali origin wants to win a seat in the US Congress.
Ilhan Omar made history after being elected to the Minnesota State Legislature.
She decided to take on an even bigger challenge: to win a seat in the US Congress.
She became the first Somali-American legislator in the United States in 2016, making her the Somali national occupying the highest power position in the United States.
Two years later, Ilhan Omar again speaks of her by deciding to run as a Democratic candidate to run for a seat in the US Congress.
She announced her candidacy in a tweet:
Officially filed to be on the ballot for US Congress to represent #MN05. I look forward to carrying on Congressman Keith Ellison’s legacy. We have hard fights ahead and I look forward to fighting alongside the residents of District 5. pic.twitter.com/gfViWmILHd

If successful, she will represent in Congress the fifth district of Minnesota, which includes Minneapolis and a number of other suburbs. However, there are still several obstacles to overcome.
Ms. Omar will now face candidates in the August primaries who also wish to run for the Democrats.
The seat of the Fifth District of Minnesota is currently occupied by Democrat Keith Ellison.
The election of the congress members will take place in November.
