State of national disaster declared in Mali

The Malian government has taken exceptional measures in response to the scale of the floods. A decree signed on August 23 establishes a national disaster across the entire territory, highlighting the situation’s urgency.

These storms have already caused considerable human damage. The current toll is around 30 deaths and 104 injuries. More than 7,000 households, or more than 47,300 people, have been affected by these devastating floods.

To address this crisis, the Malian authorities have released an envelope of 4 billion FCFA, equivalent to approximately 6 million dollars. These funds will assist disaster-stricken populations and acquire additional relief equipment.

Assa Badiallo Touré, Minister of Health and Social Development, stressed the importance of strengthening food and non-food stocks. This measure aims to prevent the outbreak of epidemics, including cholera, which could further worsen the health situation.

It should be noted that this crisis is not limited to Mali. Neighboring countries, Niger and Chad, are also affected by this bad weather, with thousands of victims recorded in these countries.
