Taliban disable Islamic State cell in Kabul after mosque attack
The Taliban say they have eliminated a group of extremists from the Islamic State (IS) terror group in Kabul. That happened just hours after several people were killed by a bomb explosion at a mosque in the capital of Afghanistan.
A Taliban spokesman said the attack on IS took place on Sunday evening. He called the operation very successful. Witnesses and reporters heard shots and explosions. A local resident told the French news agency AFP that Taliban special forces stormed at least three houses in his neighborhood. “The fighting lasted for hours,” said the witness.
According to an anonymous government source, the attack on the mosque has claimed the lives of at least five people, including Taliban members.
At the time of the attack, a farewell ceremony was held nearby for the mother of a spokesperson for the group. According to some reports, several Taliban leaders attended the ceremony.
According to the Taliban, “groups linked to IS” were suspected of being behind the blast.
