The consumption of tomatoes is therefore recommended for anyone suffering from diseases of the digestive system because they contain large quantities of organic acids.
The nutritionist emphasized that it is necessary to cook tomatoes, rather than to serve them raw, if a person suffers from gastritis or peptic ulcer disease. In addition, people who have allergies should decrease the consumption of this food.
“This fruit stimulates the release of histamine, a chemical mediator of allergic reactions,” explained the nutritionist.
Tomatoes, cooked or raw?
In addition, according to her, cooked tomatoes are more beneficial than raw ones because they contain more lycopene. This antioxidant has anti-tumor properties and also reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, heat treatment decreases their vitamin C content.
Therefore, the best option is to consume tomatoes of both types, one after the other, said the nutritionist.
Natalia Kruglova added that tomato-based sauces, like ketchup, could be harmful because they contain large amounts of sugar, glutamate, sodium, and spices.
Also, she pointed out that it is not recommended to consume tomatoes daily. To give benchmarks, the nutritionist advised not to exceed 150 to 200 grams per day.
