The first African-American to serve as Secretary of State, Colin Powell, announced Sunday that he would vote for Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the November presidential election.
“I couldn’t vote for him (in 2016), and I certainly can’t support President Trump this year. We have a constitution, we have to respect the constitution, and the president has moved away from it,” he said on CNN
The African-American denounces Donald Trump’s “lies”. “I would never have used that word for any of the four presidents I worked for: he is lying. He is lying all the time,” he said.
Powell calls on all Americans to reflect on its impact on society and the place of the United States in the world: “think, use your common sense, ask yourself: is it good for my country”?
Colin Powell is the first African American to hold the position of Joint Chief of the Defense Staff. He was also head of American diplomacy under the Republican presidency of George W. Bush. His criticisms of Donald Trump are frequent.
