Drone urges people to stay indoors in France

Since today (Friday), a drone with a loudspeaker has been flying over the southern French city of Nice, urging people to stay inside to limit an outbreak of the coronavirus.

Above the Promenade des Anglais and the city center, you can regularly hear: “Reminder of the Covid-19 guidelines: all movements outside the home are prohibited without written permission. Please keep a distance of at least one meter from other persons”.

“There is currently only one drone at work,” said Sabri Ben Hassen, a former police officer, and owner of the Drone06 company. “The speaker produces a hundred decibels.” For comparison: an Airbus goes up to 120 decibels when taking off. The initiative to have a drone deliver messages comes from the prefect of Alpes-Maritime.

Since Tuesday afternoon, people in France are not allowed to go outside, except for essentials, for which they have to sign a document stating where they are going. On Wednesday, the Nice police started to issue fines to joggers or walkers on the Promenade.

France has deployed 100,000 police officers to monitor compliance.
