How to quickly gain credibility in a new job

Authority is the key to career success and respect from superiors and colleagues. It is not easy to gain credibility, especially if you are a newcomer to an already formed team. If you don’t take care of how you are perceived at work, you risk facing many obstacles on the way to the desired position.

There are many stereotyped tips on how to earn the respect of your boss and colleagues: benevolence, politeness, smiling, willingness to help at the first call. But these qualities are unlikely to help you get what you want. Erasing your individuality, putting other people above yourself, is foolish to expect that someone will appreciate it. Chances are, you overdo it and put yourself in a losing position.

We have collected some working ways to gain credibility in the team quickly. To do this, you do not have to pretend to be someone else and curry favor with colleagues and bosses.

Determine who is who

The first thing to do in a new job is to determine who is who. Please do not rush to start communicating with your colleagues more closely; try for at least a few days to study their behavior, take a closer look at their personal qualities, see who is friends with whom. You can get a lot of helpful information from ordinary observation.

For example, you can understand if there are gossipers, bums, workaholics-perfectionists in the team, with whom it is better not to get involved. Knowing who each of your colleagues is like gives you a significant advantage. After all, you can find an individual approach to each of them. If necessary, you can count on their support.

Make useful contacts

You don’t have to dwell only on your team: if the company where you got a job has several departments, get to know the people working in them. Accounts department, sales department, secretaries, numerous managers – all these positions can be occupied by interesting and friendly employees, acquaintance with whom will not be superfluous.

You can find out a lot of useful information, better understand the motivation of your colleagues, be always up to date with the latest company news, etc. Don’t look for authority – become one yourself.

Earn the respect of your superiors

Of course, the main thing that you have to do in your new job is to win the respect of your superiors. It’s not that difficult if you are ready to do your job well and are interested in the position you hold. But there are a few more life hacks on how to appear before the boss not only as a professional but also as an irreplaceable employee.

Show initiative. Yes, it is important for your boss to see that you are doing what you should and strive to increase profits, systematize the process, discover new talents in yourself, etc. Actively suggest new ideas, share your opinion, express your desire to undergo additional training provided by the company – this way, you will quickly earn the respect and trust of your boss.

Keep your distance. No matter how well your boss treats you, always remember that he is your boss. Do not try to enter the category of his friends, do not discuss personal topics with him, do not allow yourself to be familiar. In communication with the authorities, there should not be any swagger and familiarity.

Take responsibility. If you have been entrusted with a leadership position at a new job, you must understand that you are responsible not only for yourself but also for your team. Do not try to make someone else guilty: the mistake of your subordinate is, first of all, your fault, and you must be able to admit it to your superiors. You show yourself as an incompetent employee, shifting responsibility to other people.

Don’t show your self-doubt

Even if you think you haven’t earned a place in the company, are worried about a lack of knowledge and experience, or are afraid to make a mistake, you should not show it to your new colleagues. In case of failure, try to save face, take responsibility for your actions, and try to fix everything you did. But never use derogatory statements in your address, and do not joke with yourself if you do not want this behavior to be quickly adopted by your team.

The attitude of your colleagues largely depends on how you present yourself. If they see a newcomer as a confident professional, they will treat him with respect even if he is not. If a new person in the team doubts his abilities and shows them to others, he may not be taken seriously or, in the worst case, even morally crushed.

Don’t try to please everyone

When you join a new team, it seems to you that the best strategy is to be open, friendly, and not indifferent to your new colleagues and their problems. But because of this attitude, you can quickly face certain difficulties: instead of a good attitude towards yourself, you will receive constant requests, attempts to manipulate you, anxiety, and many other problems that you did not expect.

Do not try to please everyone: always remain yourself, put yourself first, learn to refuse if you do not have the desire, time, or energy to help someone. Do not let others take advantage of you: they quickly get used to it, and it becomes more and more difficult to change the situation.
