WhatsApp introduces disappearing messages

Users of the WhatsApp messaging service will soon be able to send messages with a limited lifespan. The new feature hasn’t been launched yet, but the messaging service has shared an explanation on an FAQ section of its site.

With the new feature, messages, including photos and videos, are automatically deleted after seven days. If the feature is enabled, unread messages will also be deleted after that time period.

The disappearing messages can be set in individual chats as well as for group conversations. For individual chats, users can set this themselves. In a group conversation, only the administrator can do this.

WhatsApp warns that people should only turn on disappearing messages to people they trust. People can still forward messages or take screenshots in order to save the messages.

It is not yet known when the feature will officially launch.
