Gold mine collapse in Sudan: balance rises to 38

Rescuers have recovered additional bodies in the collapse of a gold mine in Sudan. The state mining agency adjusted its balance to 38 this morning.

The mine in the city of Al-Nuhud, in the south of the African country, collapsed on Sunday. The death toll could rise as authorities do not know exactly how many miners were detained.

Gold exports are an important source of income for Sudan. In 2018, the country exported 93 tons of precious metal. Many gold mines in Sudan are (partly) illegally operated and do not meet safety standards.
