I can’t handle adulthood: what to do when you feel like you’re not ready for adulthood

Adulthood responsibilities like paying bills, working, going shopping, and dating can sometimes literally drive a person insane. There is a good chance that people may question your ability to handle such responsibilities on a fundamental level. But don’t give up hope; by reading this information, you will figure out how to get over the idea that you can’t handle the responsibilities of adult life.

1. Review your values

The priorities one must have to establish goals are the values one holds dear in life. People frequently get the impression that they are not prepared to enter adulthood because they have not yet found their bearings and do not clearly understand the distinctions between what is truly essential and what is merely incidental in their lives.

People have different values. To make it easier for you to understand and perform an exercise that will help you understand them, here is an approximate list:

  • communication;
  • professional life and secure financial stability;
  • self-development as well as education;
  • family;
  • health and beauty;
  • hobbies.

You are free to add your choices to this list at any time. Using a sheet of paper as a guide, cut it in half horizontally. On the left, you should write the values; on the right, you should write the numbers from 1 to 10, with 1 representing “not very important” and 10 representing “extremely important.” Always try to be truthful in your responses.

Then proceed to construct another list. Put in all your wants, from the most trivial to the most extravagant. Create a list in the form of a table with four columns: the name of the desire, the date it first arose, what it is related to, and how important it is to you.

For instance, you wish to begin writing a blog, and the desire to do so first surfaced when you witnessed an illustrative example from a friend. This is because of the importance of self-development; to be a good writer, you need to have specific abilities mastered and devote time and effort to the craft.

After you have finished both lists, compare them to each other. Those with an equal amount of votes can be deemed the most important values and priorities in your life. The remainder is of secondary importance.

Because both the list and the priorities may shift throughout one’s lifetime, it is beneficial to carry out this activity annually or at least periodically.

2. Form the right habit

When life is a chaos, everything appears more challenging. You tend to forget crucial things, including keeping your promises and taking care of yourself. And you have to get into the appropriate habits to simplify your life and make things go much more smoothly.

You can get started by listing the things you do first thing in the morning and last thing at night. It would help if you filled them in with essential items such as your personal care routine, breakfast, clothing, wake-up and sleep routines, and prescription schedules.

In addition, establish a habit for yourself at work by beginning a journal in which you may record responsibilities, setting a timer for breaks, and deciding in advance what you will do for lunch and what food you will bring with you.

Set a reminder on your phone to alert you on the same days of the month to pay your bills, and stick to this schedule.

The more routines you can incorporate into your life, the less tension you will experience whenever you think about those routines.

3. Figure out how to accept responsibility

Because taking on responsibility can be nerve-wracking or taxing, many individuals tend to avoid it whenever possible. However, being able to live a normal adult life without it is simply not achievable.

This in no way implies that you should make an effort to exert control over every aspect of your life, especially because some things just can’t be managed.

If you want to be more responsible, you need to learn to see things through to their conclusion, even if it’s challenging and you don’t want to. You must educate yourself to stop laying the blame for your failures on others and instead focus on finding ways to improve the circumstances in which you find yourself. Separate yourself from people and things holding you back from reaching your objectives and feeling good about yourself.

4. Discover new things

It is highly doubtful that while you were in school, you were instructed on how to correctly fill out receipts and documentation, create a meal for the week, or hush irate youngsters. Similar to how you learned other things, you are responsible for teaching yourself this.

Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that the more you know, the easier it is to deal with the challenges of day-to-day life. The circumstance is the same with abilities.

Several aspects of one’s life, such as one’s finances, ability to communicate with others, and professional knowledge, should receive a great deal of focus.

5. Allow yourself to feel bad

If you suppress negative feelings for longer, their destructive power will increase. When one consistently works to keep a positive attitude, it is nearly impossible to deal with them.

Ultimately, this leads to discontent with oneself, which can then turn into despair and disillusionment in life.

6. Learn how to forgive yourself

Every day, a large number of people make mistakes. And if you continually berate yourself for this, the thought may creep into your head that you are not fit for any endeavor.

It is important to remember that it is acceptable to make mistakes, especially when you are an adult and have a lot of responsibilities. Learn to forgive yourself for your mistakes and look at them not as a disaster but as an experience instead.
