Dubai uses police dogs to detect travelers with coronavirus

Dubai introduces a new way to detect people infected with coronavirus. At the airport, for example, the country uses specially trained police dogs for this purpose. They can detect coronavirus in humans.

German research has previously shown that dogs can be trained fairly quickly to detect coronavirus. According to the Emirates News Agency, Dubai Airport is the first airport in the world to use the method effectively to combat the virus. The dogs could detect Covid-19 with 92 percent accuracy.

Passengers arriving from risk areas must present a blood sample to the Dubai Health Authority, the health authority, upon arrival at the airport. “Travelers who are afraid of dogs should not be afraid,” it says. The blood samples end up in a separate room, where a K9 detection dog detects the blood that is infected with the coronavirus. The results are known within just one minute.

This is an extra measure at the airport. After all, if you want to travel to Dubai, you have to use a PCR test able to demonstrate that you are not infected. What happens to travelers where the dogs detect the virus is not clear. They may be quarantined.

Dubai also wants to use the dogs to detect the virus in other places. “They can be used in police patrols or to secure shopping centers, events, or other vital facilities,” reports the United Arab Emirates Department of the Interior.
