Auwch! These marriage proposals from celebrities were painful
Last week Veerle Baetens was a guest in ‘Van Gils and guests’ to promote her new film. There she admitted with a slight blush on her cheeks that she had first refused when her current husband asked her to marry him.
Nothing to be embarrassed about, because with these celebrities the proposal did not go smoothly either.
George & Amal Clooney
George Clooney had planned his proposal perfectly. He would go on one knee at home during a romantic dinner. That had to be on the song ‘Why Shouldn’t I’ of his deceased aunt Rosemary Clooney and so he waited patiently for the song to come over in the playlist. But just when the song started, Amal stood up to clear away. Something she normally never does according to Clooney.
Clooney had to call her back from the kitchen and guided her to a box with the ring. When she opened it, it remained awfully quiet. “It’s a ring,” was the only thing Amal released. Even when Clooney sat down on one knee, not much happened at first. “It took 25 minutes for it to be completely finished,” Clooney said about that later in Ellen Degeneres’ talk show. “In the end, I told her she should know because I am 52 and could get my hip out of the bowl.”
Matthew McConaughey & Camila Alves
Matthew McConaughey (49) also wanted to ask his Camila (37) in an intimate circle. He waited until Christmas Eve and hid the ring in a box that was hidden in eight other boxes. While the whole family looked impatiently at her fingers, Camila kept unpacking the boxes.
But when the Brazilian model finally arrived at the ring, it remained chillingly silent, McConaughey said later. The actor has been sitting on one knee for a while and told his future that he would sit on it until she said ‘yes’. That finally happened and they married the following summer, in 2012. The two have two sons and a daughter.
Ben Stiller & Christine Taylor
Ben Stiller is known for his clumsy comic roles and his marriage proposal went just as it could in one of his films. Stiller flew from New York to the home of his girlfriend Taylor in Los Angeles and laid a path of rose petals and candles right through the house to the bedroom. When Taylor arrived and the big moment was about to happen, Stiller suddenly realized that he had forgotten the ring.
Stiller walked out of the room in a blind panic, after which Taylor followed him and finally said “Yes.” After 17 years of marriage, Stiller and Taylor quit in 2017. The two have two children together and they say they still have an excellent relationship.
Chrissy Teigen & John Legend
Singer John Legend had a slightly more exotic destination than his own living room in mind for his proposal. He traveled to the Maldives with Chrissy Teigen, but it went wrong immediately. To start with, the couple got into a fight on the way to the airport. As if that wasn’t enough, customs also insisted on completely unpacking Legend’s hand luggage.
The singer could barely keep the ring – which he had hidden in it – out of sight. When the two finally sat on the white beach for dinner, and Legend cleared his throat for the question, Teigen suddenly had terrible abdominal cramps. The free atmosphere and not a big speech, but a giant diamond under a lot of arugulas. Everyone was so satisfied. The couple married on Lake Como in 2013 and have a daughter (3) and a son (1).
Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green
We last saved the most remarkable marriage proposal. Because what happened on the beach on Hawaii between Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green is every fiance’s nightmare. Fox had pointed the door to an earlier proposal to Green, but the actor did not let himself be discouraged. He gathered all his courage and went on one knee on the beach at the Four Seasons Hotel.
Fox immediately said “yes” and started jumping up and down with enthusiasm. However, she dropped her ring in the sand and never found it again. No problem, Green thought, because the two married anyway. Although afterward, they separated again (to come together again). The couple is still together now and has three children.
