It was an eventful day on Saturday, November 1st, as the annual Iria Festival was held in Okrika, Rivers State. Approximately nineteen virgins received certificates from elders in the community. Giving them the freedom to bring home their marriage suitors.
While other Nigerian tribes are holding their annual festivals. Okrika residents have their annual initiation ceremony for virgins to femininity. Which is held in the last quarter of the year.
The ceremony aims to welcome young virgins who are at least 18 years old and have become women. The traditional ceremony is called “Iria” in Okrika.
